As the finals beckon, Nairobi Club will not just host matches, but a celebration of regional unity.
Kenya’s junior tennis renaissance will reach its climax on Thursday (tomorrow), when the country hosts the Team Championships finals of the ITF/CAT Eastern Africa Junior Individual and Team Championships for the 14 and Under and 16 and Under categories at the historic Nairobi Club.
For nine days, from January 14-22, the venue has been a melting pot of youthful ambition, skill and regional rivalry, drawing the best junior players from CAT Zone IV nations, including Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, Seychelles, Ethiopia, Eritrea and Somalia.
As the tournament heads into its decisive final day on Thursday, Kenya stands on the brink of a rare clean sweep.
The hosts will contest all four team finals, a powerful statement of depth and dominance that underlines the country’s growing stature in junior tennis across Eastern Africa.
The morning session will set the tone. At 9am, Kenya’s Girls Under-14 team will lock horns with Ethiopia in what promises to be a spirited encounter between two rapidly improving sides.
At the same time, the Boys Under-14 final will see Kenya face long-time rivals Tanzania, renewing a regional duel that has consistently produced riveting tennis.
Midday brings even higher stakes. The Girls Under-16 final, scheduled for 12 noon, pits Kenya against Burundi, while the Boys Under-16 showdown will see the hosts take on Uganda in a contest expected to test both nerve and endurance. With all four trophies within reach, Thursday could mark a landmark day in Kenyan junior tennis history.
Kenya’s challenge is anchored by a talented and balanced squad. The Girls Under-14 team features Bathsheba Ogamba, Paula Ouko and Naila Gikunda, while the Boys Under-14 side is represented by Indiatsi Olembo, Evans Mundia and Khalil Nathani.
In the Under-16 category, Seline Ahoya, Nancy Kawira, and Felicia Ouko will carry the nation’s hopes in the girls’ final, with Jeff Okuku, Aum Chandarana and Ayaan Quadros lining up for the boys.
Their confidence is well founded. Kenya stamped its authority earlier in the championships by sweeping all the individual singles titles.
Ogamba and Olembo triumphed in the Under-14 category, while Kawira and Okuku emerged champions in the Under-16 division, a clean sweep that set the stage for the team finals.
Behind the scenes, a dedicated technical bench comprising coaches Allan Cooper, Peter Rakuom, Nicholas Ananda and Whycliffe Okenye has guided the young players through the pressures of competition.
As the finals beckon, Nairobi Club will not just host matches, but a celebration of regional unity, youthful promise and Kenya’s bold push to shape the future of tennis in Eastern Africa.
