Kenya Pipeline pledges millions as KPC women's team targets Africa volleyball crown

  • Sports Extra

Kenya Pipeline Company’s women’s volleyball team has been flagged off for the CAVB Africa Women Club Championships in Cairo, aiming to reclaim the continental title they last won two decades ago.

Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC) Women’s Volleyball Team has set its sights on reclaiming the Africa Women Club title they last won two decades ago, with Managing Director Joe Sang pledging millions in rewards if the team reaches the semi-finals and beyond.

The renewed ambition underscores the determination of the five-time former African champions to return to continental dominance as the team intensifies preparation at the Kasarani.

KPC officially flagged off the team to represent Kenya at the Confederation of African Volleyball (CAVB) Women Club Championships serving off in Cairo, Egypt on April 13-23. Speaking during the ceremony at Kasarani on Wednesday, Managing Director Joe Sang expressed strong confidence in the squad, highlighting consistency, discipline, and commitment as the foundation of their success.

Sang emphasized the importance of teamwork, trust, and resilience, urging players to maintain unity on and off the court. He noted that the team’s third-place finish in 2025 and second-place finish in 2024 demonstrates its potential to go even further this year. According to him, success will depend not only on individual talent, but also on collective effort and adherence to guidance from the technical bench.

To further motivate the team, KPC has introduced performance-based incentives. Sang announced that the team will receive Sh1 million upon reaching the semi-finals, an additional Sh2 million if they advance to the finals, and a significantly improved reward should they clinch the championship title.

The squad has also been strengthened with new signings drawn from last year’s national volleyball championships, including promising young players aged 16 and 17. Head coach Geoffrey Omondi confirmed that the team has already begun residential training at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, ahead of the final squad selection for the Egypt tournament.

The CAVB Championships remain Africa’s premier volleyball competition, bringing together top teams across the continent to compete for continental honours and qualification to global events such as the FIVB Volleyball World Championships.

The flag-off ceremony was attended by key stakeholders, including Sports Kenya representative Japheth Kaunyu, KPC Volleyball Chairman Paul Njuguna, Team Manager Caroline Chebet, Head Coach Geoffrey Omondi, and other KPC staff, all of whom expressed optimism about the team’s prospects on the continental stage. While acknowledging other teams were also working hard to fight for the crown, captain Gladys Ekaru and former Kenyan international Noel Murambi laid bare the ambitions of the team going for nothing short of glory.
