Kenyan defender Amos Wanjala joins Valencia CF Mestalla

The move is the most significant recent transfers involving a Kenyan youth international to Europe.

Former St Anthony’s Boys High School Kitale student Amos Emmanuel Wanjala has taken a major step in his career after signing for Valencia CF Mestalla, the reserve side of Spanish La Liga outfit Valencia CF.

The 19-year-old Kenyan defender penned a two-year deal on January 16, 2026, with the move officially confirmed on January 25, 2026, marking one of the most significant recent transfers involving a Kenyan youth international to Europe.

Wanjala joins Valencia Mestalla from Athletic Club Torrellano, moving up the Spanish football ladder. According to Spanish outlet Superdeporte, Valencia moved swiftly for the centre-back as they sought defensive reinforcement following a serious injury to Andrés Caro. While Pedro Gomes was initially targeted, Wanjala’s acquisition became a central part of the club’s winter transfer strategy and the first confirmed signing of the window for the Mestalla side.

The Kenyan is expected to integrate immediately into the squad for the second half of the season. Valencia Mestalla compete in Spain’s Primera Federación, a highly competitive league that serves as a key pathway to the club’s La Liga first team.

Wanjala’s rise reflects Kenya’s growing ability to produce export-quality footballers. He came through St Anthony’s Boys High School, Kitale, a renowned talent factory, before progressing rapidly through the national youth ranks and into professional football in Spain.

A calm, physically strong and tactically intelligent defender, Wanjala has earned a reputation for maturity beyond his years. These qualities were most evident with the Kenya Under-20 national team, where he captained the Rising Stars at the most recent Africa U-20 Cup of Nations, anchoring the defence and earning praise for his positional discipline and leadership.

During his time at Torrellano, Wanjala gained valuable experience in the Tercera Federación and also represented the Selección Valenciana at the UEFA Regions’ Cup, further increasing his exposure to high-level European football.

Valencia view Wanjala as a player with both immediate value and long-term potential. His arrival bolsters a Mestalla defence affected by injuries, while fitting the club’s model of developing young, physically capable defenders within its academy system.

His signing also highlights Spain’s growing interest in Kenyan talent. Wanjala follows in the footsteps of Michael Olunga, formerly of Girona, and McDonald Mariga, who played for Real Sociedad and Real Oviedo, while fellow Kenya U-20 international Aldrine Kibet - a former St Anthony's Boys Kitale student - is currently with Celta Vigo’s reserves.

Beyond personal success, Wanjala’s move sends a strong message to young Kenyan players that pathways from school football to elite European systems are increasingly achievable.
