Kenyan star Collins Sichenje on the verge of joining Charlton Athletic

Football League World reported on Wednesday that Charlton are lining up an offer of around Sh355 million (£2 million) for the 22-year-old, who currently plies his trade in Serbia’s Super Liga with title contenders Vojvodina.

Kenyan international Collins Sichenje is emerging as a prime defensive target for Charlton Athletic, with the Championship strugglers preparing a significant seven-figure bid to secure the services of the centre-back ahead of the season’s decisive run-in.

Football League World reported on Wednesday that Charlton are lining up an offer of around Sh355 million (£2 million) for the 22-year-old, who currently plies his trade in Serbia’s Super Liga with title contenders Vojvodina. The proposed move would mark a major investment by Charlton as manager Nathan Jones looks to address defensive frailties that have left the club hovering dangerously close to the relegation zone.

Sichenje has impressed since joining Vojvodina from Swedish giants AIK in September 2024. Now in his second season in Serbia, he has cemented himself as a regular starter, making 17 league appearances and scoring once. His contributions have been key to Vojvodina’s strong campaign, with the club sitting third on the table and firmly in the hunt near the summit.

A commanding presence at the back, Sichenje is comfortable in possession, strong in aerial duels and composed when playing out from defence. Those attributes have convinced Charlton that he fits the profile of a modern centre-back capable of adapting quickly to the physical and tactical demands of English football. The club believes his athleticism and calmness under pressure could bring much-needed stability to a backline that has struggled for consistency.

Despite Charlton’s current woes, Sichenje is reportedly open to a move to England. The chance to test himself in a highly competitive environment and showcase his ability at Charlton is understood to be a major draw.

Internationally, Sichenje has already earned eight caps for Kenya’s Harambee Stars, scoring once. A high-profile move to England could boost his standing ahead of the upcoming FIFA international break as he looks to re-establish himself in the national set-up.

For Charlton, urgency is growing. Sitting just three points above the chop in 19th place in the 24-team league, and with only three wins in their last 14 matches, defensive reinforcements have become a priority after recent attacking additions. Landing former AFC Leopards player Sichenje would not only strengthen their survival push, but also signal serious intent as they battle to secure their league status.
