Okutoyi stuns top seed Shinikova to reach W35 Nairobi 2 semi-finals
Kenya’s Angella Okutoyi produced a superb performance to stun Bulgarian top seed Isabella Shinikova and book a place in the singles semi-finals of the W35 Nairobi 2 tournament at Parklands Sports Club on Friday.
The 21-year-old African Games champion, who is ranked 561st on the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) singles rankings, overcame Shinikova in a hard-fought three-set encounter, winning 7-5, 4-6, 6-2 in a match that lasted two hours and 24 minutes. It was a statement victory for Okutoyi, who showed composure, power and tactical discipline against a more fancied opponent.
Okutoyi edged a tight opening set 7-5 after matching Shinikova shot for shot. The Bulgarian responded in the second set, breaking early to race to a 4-0 lead before closing it out 6-4 despite a spirited fightback from the Kenyan. In the deciding third set, however, Okutoyi took full control, breaking serve repeatedly to dominate 6-2 and seal her place in the last four.
Service played a key role in the Kenyan’s victory. Okutoyi fired four aces compared to Shinikova’s one and converted eight of her 11 break-point opportunities, while the Bulgarian managed six breaks from 11 chances. Okutoyi, who turns 22 on January 29, won 59 percent of her first-serve points and 43 percent on her second serve, both slightly higher than Shinikova’s serves of 56 percent and 39 percent respectively.
The Auburn University final-year Business Administration student has enjoyed an impressive run at the tournament. In the opening round, she thrashed India’s Saumya Vig 6-0, 6-1 before dispatching Egyptian fifth seed Lamis Alhussein 6-3, 6-3 in the second round. The victory over Alhussein echoed their last meeting at the 2024 African Games in Ghana, where Okutoyi emerged champion in the singles final.
Shinikova had reached the quarter-finals after comfortable wins over Indian qualifier Sravya Chilakalapudi 6-1, 6-3 and Iran’s Mandegar Farzami 6-4, 6-4.
Okutoyi will now face Egypt’s third seed Sandra Samir, ranked 398th in the world, in the semi-finals. Samir advanced after defeating Chinese seventh seed Yufei Ren 7-6(6), 6-3 in another quarter-final played on Friday.
