Angella Okutoyi walked away with 35 Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) ranking points after edging Italy’s Martina Colmegna.

At just 21, Kenya’s tennis queen Angella Okutoyi delivered a performance to remember at Parklands Sports Club in Nairobi on Sunday, capping a remarkable week by clinching the singles and doubles titles at the W35 tournament and underlining her growing stature on the international stage.

Okutoyi, who turns 22 on January 29, 2026, walked away with Sh626,400 and 35 Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) ranking points after edging Italy’s Martina Colmegna in a pulsating singles final. The Kenyan overcame the 29-year-old Italian 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 in a battle that lasted two hours and 23 minutes, showcasing resilience, composure and tactical maturity beyond her years.

Ranked 561st in the WTA singles rankings, Okutoyi had to dig deep in the final.

Despite committing 10 double faults to Colmegna’s one, Okutoyi proved more effective when it mattered, winning a higher percentage of points on her second serve (50 percent compared to Colmegna’s 33 percent). Colmegna, who finished runner-up, earned Sh339,918 and 23 WTA points.

Okutoyi’s road to the title was anything, but easy. The African Games champion Okutoyi opened her campaign with a confident 6-4, 6-3 win over eighth seed Luca Udvardy of Hungary, before dispatching Serbia’s Dusica Popovski 6-4, 6-1 in the second round.

In the quarter-finals, she dominated top seed Natalija Senic of Serbia, racing to a 6-1 lead before Senic retired. The semi-final provided the sternest test, with Okutoyi rallying from a set down to beat sixth seed Zuzanna Pawlikowska of Poland 2-6, 6-0, 7-5, setting the stage for her final triumph over Colmegna.

The week got even better for Okutoyi in the doubles. Partnering Pawlikowska, she claimed the doubles title after a 6-2, 7-5 victory over the French-Chinese pairing of Reguer and Ren.

The final, which was rescheduled to Sunday after being halted on Saturday with Okutoyi and Pawlikowska leading 6-2, 5-5, earned the champions Sh227,127 to be shared equally, along with 35 WTA points each.

The runners-up split Sh115,368 equally, and got 23 points apiece.

Attention now shifts to the second W35 Nairobi tournament, which began with qualifying matches on Saturday.

Kenyans Stacy Yego and Seline Ahoya progressed to the next round after winning their qualifiers, while Ashley Wafula, Azaliyah Kavuisya and Hadassah Msine exited early.
