Valverde hat-trick sinks Manchester City as England clubs hope for comeback next week

Looking Real Madrid straight in the eyes can be tricky.

It was a bruising night for English clubs in the UEFA Champions League as Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain delivered commanding performances, while Arsenal needed a late penalty to escape Germany with a draw.

The night belonged to Federico Valverde, whose sensational hat-trick powered Real Madrid to a 3–0 victory over Manchester City in their round-of-16 first-leg clash at the Santiago Bernabéu.

Valverde struck three times in the first half--in the 20th, 27th and 42nd minutes--leaving Pep Guardiola’s side stunned and facing a steep task in the second leg at the Etihad.

City struggled to cope with Madrid’s intensity and were fortunate not to concede more on a night when the Spanish giants looked back to their ruthless best.

PSG punish Chelsea

In Paris, defending champions Paris Saint-Germain overwhelmed Chelsea 5–2, turning the Parc des Princes into a festival of attacking football.
PSG’s second-half surge proved decisive, with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia scoring twice as the French side took firm control of the tie.

Chelsea showed flashes of resistance but ultimately struggled to contain PSG’s pace and creativity.

The result leaves the London club needing a near-perfect performance in the return leg to keep their Champions League hopes alive.

Bodø/Glimt continue European fairytale

Elsewhere in Norway, Bodø/Glimt stunned Sporting CP 3–0, continuing one of the most remarkable European runs this season.

The Norwegian side combined discipline with clinical finishing to put themselves firmly in control heading into the second leg in Lisbon.

Arsenal rescue draw in Germany

At the BayArena, Arsenal salvaged a 1–1 draw against Bayer Leverkusen thanks to a dramatic late penalty.

Leverkusen had taken the lead shortly after the break when Robert Andrich scored in the 46th minute, putting the Bundesliga side in control.

But with the game slipping away, Kai Havertz stepped up in the 89th minute to convert a penalty against his former club and earn the Gunners a valuable draw to take back to London.

Wednesday’s Champions League results:

  • Real Madrid 3–0 Manchester City
  • Paris Saint-Germain 5–2 Chelsea
  • Bodø/Glimt 3–0 Sporting CP
  • Bayer Leverkusen 1–1 Arsenal

A tough night for England

Three Premier League sides were in action, but only Arsenal avoided defeat.

Manchester City now face a mountain in the return leg, Chelsea must overturn a three-goal deficit, while Arsenal will feel relieved to head back to the Emirates with the tie still alive.

For the rest of Europe, however, the story of the night was simple--Valverde’s hat-trick and Real Madrid’s reminder that Champions League nights still belong to them.
