Virani is the only home player left standing in the singles draw.
Zayyan Virani faces a stern test from Pakistan’s Hamza Roman in one of the singles semi-final matches at the J30 Nairobi ITF East Africa Junior Circuit on Saturday, January 31, 2026, a showdown that now defines Kenya’s hopes at the clay courts of the Nairobi Club.
Carrying the national flag with authority, Virani booked his place in the last four on Thursday.
He is the only home player left standing in the singles draw.
The Spain-based 16-year-old right-hander has grown in stature with every round. His quarter-final performance on the morning of January 29, 2026, was a statement of intent as he brushed aside Pakistan’s Ahtesham Humayun in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2.
Calm under pressure, Virani dictated play from the baseline, mixing depth and patience with timely aggression. The opening set briefly threatened to swing when Humayun searched for momentum, but Virani’s composure at crucial points proved decisive.
By closing out the contest efficiently in two sets, Virani once again highlighted the qualities that have defined his Nairobi campaign: consistency, smart shot selection, powerful shots and an increasing comfort on clay. With the rest of the Kenyan singles contingent already eliminated, the spotlight now shines solely on him, amplifying both the pressure and the promise of a deep run on home soil.
Virani’s day, however, extended beyond singles success. Returning to court in the afternoon for doubles, he teamed up with Korea’s Gyeom Do and delivered another commanding performance. The top-seeded pair dismantled Ionaris Motskakos and Franz Stich 6-3, 6-0 in the round of 16, their powerful serves, aggressive net play and sharp returns leaving no room for resistance. The display signaled serious intent in the doubles draw.
Elsewhere, Gyeom Do also advanced to the singles semi-finals after defeating compatriot Jeong Won Kwom 6-0, 6-4. Switzerland’s Nico Sommer booked his place with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Pakistan’s AbuBakar Talha, while Hamza Roman completed the semi-final line-up by outclassing France’s Theo Alexandre 6-4, 6-3. Gyeom enters the singles as the top seed, with Virani seeded second, and the duo also lead the doubles field.
Saturday (today) is finally with us. Virani will battle Roman for a place in the singles final before partnering Gyeom again in the doubles quarter-final against Serbia’s Andrija Dragicevic and Mihajlo Radman.
For the young Kenyan, the mission is clear and boldly ambitious: to chase both singles and doubles glory on home soil, and in doing so, crown a breakthrough week with silverware.
