Kenya’s long-serving opposition leader, Rt. Hon. Raila Amolo Odinga, has died in India after collapsing at a wellness facility in Kerala, reliable sources have confirmed. Efforts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful.

The Odinga family is expected to release an official statement shortly to clarify the circumstances surrounding his passing.

Mr Odinga, who has been a central figure in Kenya’s democracy for decades, had travelled to India several weeks ago for medical check-ups and rest.

His death comes just days before the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) was set to mark its 20th anniversary — a milestone for the party he founded.

Last week, Raila’s elder brother, Dr Oburu Oginga, had assured the country that the ODM leader was “up and about” and only recuperating.

He dismissed social media reports suggesting Raila was critically ill or hospitalised, terming them as rumours meant to cause unnecessary panic.

“He is recuperating and resting. He was not in the condition being reported in the press,” Dr Oburu said in a televised clarification.

Dr Oburu, who is also the Senator for Siaya County, further urged Kenyans to pray for his brother’s health and to ignore malicious speculation.

Mr Odinga, often referred to as Baba, was widely regarded as the father of Kenya’s modern democracy and a continental voice for reform and justice.

His death has sent shockwaves across the nation, with messages of condolence pouring in from leaders and supporters.

More updates will follow once the family issues its official statement.
