Uganda's opposition leader Bobi Wine urges Museveni to end crackdowns, citing attacks on his family and deputies.
KAMPALA, Uganda
Uganda's main opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, has told President Yoweri Museveni to stop the crackdown on leaders if he indeed won the January 15, 2026, elections legitimately.
In a video released Saturday night, he said the soldiers have attacked his family three times, with the Friday night attack being the deadliest, which resulted in his wife, Barbie Kyagulanyi, getting hospitalised.
Bobi Wine said that Uganda is undergoing the saddest moments as the raid saw the attackers sweep away all the important documents and gadgets from his home.
Among the documents carted away are land title deeds, academic certificates, and children's laptops. He said that two of his deputies were abducted and their whereabouts remain unknown, with a third deputy, Muwanga Kivumbi, having been arrested recently and put under detention.
He claimed that President Museveni is using his son, Chief of Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF) General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, to sow fear among the opposition leaders.
The National Unity Platform (NUP) leader said that those acts are not signs of strength; rather, they are signs of weakness.
"If Museveni claims that he won the election, then why is he panicking?" he posed.
"Why is he doing all manner of terrible things? Why is he harassing people? Why is he harassing me and my family? Those are signs of shame; those are signs of illegitimacy," he said.
Bobi Wine then directed the message to his fellow countrymen, where he explained that he chose to escape from his house so that he could find a platform to continue to speak to them, like he did on Saturday, promising brighter days ahead.
"I encourage you to be strong, to be smart, to be creative," Bobi Wine urged.
He added that despite sustained pressure and attacks, they (authorities) are not as smart as they thought they are.
"These people are not as strong as they purport and indeed they are not as smart as they are... they failed to find me for eight days. I also tell you that we must never give up. Uganda is our country and we must fight and liberate it."
He said he will resurface at an appropriate time "to forward our struggle".
"In the meantime I am trying to keep safe to continue talking to you (Ugandans)," he said.
Earlier on Saturday, Bobi Wine shared photos of destruction caused in his house by people he claimed are soldiers who were baying for his blood.
"Hundreds of soldiers descended on our home in Magere last night. Most were dressed in SFC uniforms while others were in regular UPDF uniforms and others in plain clothes," Bobi Wine posted on social media platform X.
He said many of them were drunk and that they came with ladders, ready to climb upstairs. In the photos shared, there is a wave of destruction, said to have been caused by the soldiers.
"They broke our doors and forced themselves into our house. Using hammers, they hit walls, window glasses, and doors. They put my wife on gunpoint, asking her to reveal my whereabouts," he added.
In the invasion, the victims said money was stolen, without disclosing the exact amount, and that numerous valuable documents and all electronic gadgets were carted away.
"They took phones, laptops, chargers, our internet system, our CCTV system, speakers, and any electronic gadget they could lay their criminal hands on," he added.
No part of his house was spared, including the ceiling.
Bobi Wine said their tormentors grabbed his wife's phone, forced her to sit down, and ordered her to remove her password, but she refused.
They spewed insults on her as they put her through assault, forcefully removed her blouse and took pictures, totally against any woman's dignity.
"Speaking Runyakore, they asked why she would get married to a Muganda, and why we would dare challenge Museveni," he said.
Their askari and house maid were also assaulted as the attackers ordered the askari to show them where the basement is, "where I was hiding."
According to Bobi Wine, who rejected the outcome of the January 15, 2026, presidential polls, the attackers also asked where his children were!
"My wife was rushed to hospital where she remains admitted--dealing with all the physical and psychological trauma," he said.
The musician-cum-politician said despite all that is done to him and his people, "we remain firm in our belief that Uganda will be free."
His lawyer Robert Amsterdam has urged the United Nations and the international community to intervene and save his client whose life is in danger.
This is after General Kainerugaba threatened that he was searching Bobi Wine to deal with him.
The recent X post by General Kainerugaba, in which he said he wished the 23rd victim of the crackdown on supporters of NUP to be "Kabobi", sparked outrage in Uganda and globally.
Bobi Wine thanked “friends of Uganda” who continue to call out the government.
