Detectives have recorded statements from 28 individuals, including seven passengers from the bus allegedly involved in the crash.
Detectives investigating the road crash that killed former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo are preparing to submit their findings to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), even as authorities warn against speculation around the case.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said the inquiry into the accident that occurred on the night of December 13, 2025, at Karai area along the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway, is nearing completion and will be forwarded to the ODPP for appropriate action.
“The inquiry has been wide-ranging and comprehensive, addressing concerns raised both in the public domain and through official investigative channels,” the DCI said.
Detectives have recorded statements from 28 individuals, including seven passengers from the bus allegedly involved in the crash who voluntarily presented themselves to assist investigators.
Others who recorded statements include National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, who cooperated with detectives at an early stage, and George Khaniri, a close friend of the late Mr Jirongo.
Mr Khaniri and his wife, Eunice Chelagat, visited the accident scene on the day it occurred and later facilitated the transfer of Mr Jirongo’s body from Naivasha Sub-County Hospital Mortuary to Lee Funeral Home.
According to the DCI, a post-mortem examination established that Mr Jirongo died from multiple crush injuries caused by blunt force trauma.
The pathologist documented a crushed chest, a broken sternum, and lacerations to the heart, liver and kidneys.
The DCI cautioned politicians, media outlets and the public against making premature or unsubstantiated claims that could compromise the investigation.
“We urge restraint and ask members of the public and political leaders to refrain from statements that may prejudice ongoing investigations. They can cause unnecessary public anxiety, or unfairly injure the character of individuals who have cooperated with investigators,” the agency said.
Mr Jirongo was buried on December 30, 2025, at his family home in Lumakanda, Lugari Constituency, Kakamega County.
Before the burial, there were suggestions for Tiriki elders to perform a cultural rite in which he was to be buried with a lit torch.
There have been speculations on public figures regarding the torch, a rumour that the DCI wants Kenyans to stop peddling.
