DCI said investigations into the incident, which occurred on the night of December 13, 2025, at Karai along the Nakuru–Nairobi Highway, point to a traffic accident.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has concluded that the death of former Cabinet minister and veteran politician Cyrus Jirongo was the result of a road traffic accident, with no evidence of foul play.
In a statement signed by Director of Liaison and Corporate Communications, Mr John K Marete, the DCI said investigations into the incident, which occurred on the night of December 13, 2025, at Karai along the Nakuru–Nairobi Highway, point to a traffic accident.
"A multi-disciplinary investigative team comprising homicide detectives, forensic experts from the National Forensic Laboratory and officers from the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau was deployed immediately after the incident," says the statement.
The team processed the scene, preserved exhibits, reviewed CCTV footage from Eagol Petrol Station, analysed the bus manifest and examined amateur video recordings taken at the scene.
Detectives also recorded statements from several eyewitnesses and individuals who interacted with Mr Jirongo shortly before his death.
"These included his wife Mrs Ann Lanoi Pertet, who was the first family member contacted after the incident, the bus driver and conductor, petrol station staff, and seven passengers who were on board the bus," said the DCI.
In addition, National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, former Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala, and a Mr Ibrahim Sambuli, who had interacted with Mr Jirongo earlier that evening at Karen Oasis Restaurant, voluntarily recorded statements with investigators.
The driver of an alleged rescue bus was also questioned as part of the inquiry.
“Based on the evidence gathered and analysed so far, the incident appears to be a road traffic accident, with no indications of foul play,” the DCI said.
The investigation file will now be forwarded to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) for further directions, including possible charges against the PSV driver, depending on the evidence presented.
The DCI urged political leaders and the public to refrain from speculation, warning that unverified claims could mislead the public and interfere with due process.
Mr Jirongo’s death had sparked widespread public debate and speculation, given his stature in national politics.
The DCI conveyed condolences to his family and encouraged anyone with additional information to report to the nearest police station or contact the agency through its confidential reporting channels.
