Diani Beach in Kwale County has once again made waves on the global stage, clinching its eighth consecutive title as Africa’s Leading Beach Destination at the 2024 World Travel Awards.
This year's World Travel Awards were held at Diamonds Leisure Beach and Golf Resort in Diani, Kwale County.
Diani beaches have been praised for their pristine white sands, crystal-clear turquoise waters, and breathtaking sunsets, consistently captivating tourists from around the world.
In the celebration several hotels in Diani were awarded in various categories.
Diamonds Leisure was named Africa’s Leading Resort, while Chale Island earned the title of Africa’s Leading Private Island Resort.
Swahili Beach Resort was recognised as Africa’s Leading Beach Resort, Leopard Beach Resort as Africa’s Leading Hotel Residence, and Baobab Beach Resort was celebrated as Africa’s Leading Family Resort.
Mnarani Beach Resort in Kilifi County was named African leading hotel.
Other Kenyan winners were Nairobi as the leading Business Travel Destination, Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) as the leading airport in Africa, while Kenya Airways was recognised as the African leading airline brand.
While receiving the award, General Manager of Diamonds Leisure Andrew Cook, who was also the host of the 31st World Travel Awards, said the celebrations were not only about the travel and tourism sector, but the passion, resilience, and innovation that define this industry.
"We are committed to offering not just a destination, but an experience that captivates the senses and leaves lasting memories. From our pristine beaches and luxurious amenities to the warmth of Kenyan hospitality and the vibrant culture that surrounds us, we are proud to showcase the finest of what this beautiful region has to offer," Mr Cook said.
Leopard Beach Resort Residences Manager Joan Ndung’u emphasized the importance of adapting to evolving guest needs.
“Each year, we do something different. If we do not change with the trends, today’s guests will not come back. The awards challenge us to keep improving our services,” Ms Ndung'u remarked.
Despite these triumphs, Kenya faced stiff competition in the tourism sector, losing its title as Africa's Leading Destination to Tanzania.
This marked a significant shift, with 27 countries participating in this year’s awards, showcasing the increasing competitiveness within the continent.
During the gala night, Kwale Governor Fatuma Achani expressed her pride in the achievements of Diani and its resorts.
"Our efforts in bettering Kwale have been instrumental in maintaining Diani Beach’s status as a leading global destination," Ms Achani stated.
The governor highlighted her administration’s focus on improving infrastructure and enhancing security to attract more tourists and investors.
Ms Achani elaborated on several initiatives that have contributed to the region’s appeal, including the construction of beach access roads, installation of street lighting, and collaborations with security agencies to ensure safety along the beaches.
Additionally, the completion of the Dongo-Kundu Bypass and the expansion of the Diani airstrip have significantly boosted accessibility, making the area more attractive to tourists.
Looking forward, Governor Achani outlined plans for further development projects aimed at diversifying Kwale’s tourism offerings.
“We want to make Diani not only a beach destination, but also a cultural and eco-tourism hotspot,” she said, reaffirming her government’s commitment to sustainable tourism development.
She emphasized the importance of partnerships with the private sector to promote responsible tourism practices that protect the environment and cultural heritage.
Ms Achani's sentiments on sustainability were echoed by General Manager of Pride Inn Azure Kennedy Mwachuli.
"Our hotel deserves to be Kenya’s leading business hotel because we put sustainability at the forefront while ensuring guests receive the best experience," Mr Mwachuli stated.
The awards celebration not only recognised individual accomplishments, but also underscored the collaborative spirit of the Kenyan tourism industry.
Mr Cook highlighted the significance of collective efforts in driving growth and elevating the global travel industry, particularly in Africa.
"The World Travel Awards remind us of our shared responsibility to sustain momentum and push the boundaries of excellence in tourism," he said.
