Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir has called on Mombasa parents to fully utilise the county’s bursary programme, now enhanced with a school feeding component, to ensure their children remain in school.

Speaking during the Likoni NG-CDF bursary distribution at Mwahima Stadium, he said the initiative reduces costs by about Sh12,000 per learner, covering both school fees and daily meals.

The programme is part of the Mombasa County Elimu Scheme, which recently cleared all pending bursary obligations for over 30,000 students in public day secondary schools.

It came into force after the signing of an Intergovernmental Partnership Agreement (IPA) between the county government and the national Ministry of Education.

“With these bursaries and the feeding programme, parents in Mombasa should take full advantage and have no reason not to send their children to school,” Mr Nassir said.

The scheme also seeks to extend support to learners in private schools serving low- and middle-income communities

Governor Nassir said he convened a consultative meeting with the Private Schools Association of Mombasa to explore a structured approach for including these schools.

That would  further reduce the overall cost of education across the county.

Combined with additional NG-CDF assistance, families now pay between Sh1,000 and Sh2,000 per term, making secondary education more affordable.

Mr Nassir described the partnership between the county and national government as a sustainable solution to improve attendance, classroom focus, and learning outcomes.

The distribution was led by Area MP Mishi Mboko, who handed out Sh75 million in bursaries to students from Grade 10 to Form 4, an increase of nearly Sh10 million from the year 2025.

“I encourage all bursary beneficiaries to take their studies seriously and make the most of this support,” Ms Mboko said.
