Muslims across Kenya are preparing for Eid-ul-Fitr, the festival marking the end of the Holy Month of Ramadhan.

On Thursday, March 19, 2026, the National Moon Sighting Committee will convene at the Kadhi’s Court in Upper Hill, Nairobi to receive reports of the new moon of Shawwal, which signals the start of Eid celebrations the following morning.

“We call upon all Muslims to look out for the new moon and share credible, locally-based sighting information with the National Moon Sighting Committee,” said Acting Chief Kadhi Sukyan Hassan Omar.

The committee will sit from 6pm to 9pm to examine reports from across the country before advising the faithful on the official timing of Eid.

How to report moon sightings

Members of the public can submit sightings through multiple channels:

  • Local Kadhi’s Courts, Muslim organisations, Imams, and community leaders

The Kadhi’s Court emphasized that participation from all stakeholders is crucial for accuracy, transparency, and unity in the national observation process.

Who is on the committee?

The National Moon Sighting Committee brings together religious leaders, academics, and community representatives, including:

  • Supreme Council of Kenya Muslims (SUPKEM)
  • Council of Imams and Preachers of Kenya (CIPK)
  • Jamia Mosque Committees in Nairobi and Makina-Kibra
  • Fatwa Council of Kenya
  • Kenya Muslim Disciplined Service Chaplaincy
  • East Africa Moon Sighting Committee
  • Umma University and Islamic University of Kenya

“Your participation is highly valued in ensuring unity and accuracy in the national moon sighting process,” the statement added.

A nod to Ramadhan

This year, some Muslims in Kenya began fasting in alignment with Saudi Arabia, following reports from the Middle East.

The national observation of the new moon of Shawwal will now guide the official conclusion of Ramadhan and the celebration of Eid-ul-Fitr the next morning.

Muslims are encouraged to pray for unity, peace, and blessings, and prepare for the joyous festival with their families and communities.
