Wetang’ula joins political leaders at burial of Owen Baya’s mother in Kilifi
National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula on Monday led leaders in mourning during the burial of Mama Dorothy Baya Mweri, mother of Kilifi North MP Owen Baya, in Dabaso Ward, Kilifi County.
Mr Wetang’ula, under whose leadership Mr Baya serves in the National Assembly, used the occasion to call for unity and caution against divisive politics, warning that tribal and regional tensions could undermine national cohesion ahead of the 2027 elections.
President William Ruto’s aide Farouk Kibet said he stood in solidarity with Mr Baya, the Deputy Majority Leader in the National Assembly, and the people of Kilifi North during the loss.
“We stand in solidarity with Hon. Owen Baya and the people of Kilifi North during this moment of loss,” Mr Kibet said.
“Mama Dorothy was a respected matriarch whose warmth, faith and mentorship touched many lives,” he added.
“Her dedication to supporting vulnerable families leaves a lasting legacy in the community.”
Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir, who represented ODM leader Oburu Oginga, echoed Wetang’ula’s call for unity, urging Coast leaders to work together to strengthen the region’s voice nationally.
“Beyond celebrating Mama Dorothy’s life, we must rise above division and stand together around a shared agenda for the Coast,” Mr Nassir said.
“Her life reminds us that true strength lies in service, faith, and unity.”
The late Mama Dorothy was also the mother of Bishop Alphonce Baya of the ACK Mombasa Diocese.
Among other leaders present were Senate Speaker Amason Kingi, Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah, Youth and Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya, Kilifi Governor Gideon Mung’aro, and South Mugirango MP Silvanus Osoro.
Others were Principal Secretary Fikirini Jacobs, COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli, Malindi MP Aisha Jumwa and Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse.
Leaders eulogised the late Mama Dorothy as a devoted mother and community pillar whose influence extended beyond her family.
She was remembered for her dedication to family, education, and service, leaving a lasting impact in Kilifi North and beyond.
