Why Emurua Dikirr is bracing for a dramatic by-election after IEBC declaration

Widow of the late MP Johana Ng’eno tipped to run as speculation links Citizen TV journalist Stephen Letoo to the May 14, 2026, race.

Emurua Dikirr is once again sliding into campaign mode after Kenya’s electoral commission formally declared a by-election to fill the parliamentary seat left vacant by the late MP Johana Ng’eno.

In a gazette notice issued on Sunday, March 15, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission set Thursday, May 14, 2026, as the day voters in the Narok County constituency will elect a new Member of Parliament.

The declaration comes just weeks after Ng’eno died in a helicopter crash on February 28 in Nandi County, a tragedy that stunned the Rift Valley and abruptly ended the career of one of the region’s most outspoken politicians.

Now, even before the campaign posters go up, the political rumour mill is already in full swing.

Widow emerging as early favourite

The name dominating early discussions is Naiyanoi Ntutu Ng’eno, the widow of the late MP.

Community elders and relatives have reportedly urged her to step forward and defend the seat, arguing that allowing the family to complete Ng’eno’s development agenda would honour his legacy.

Her possible candidacy has quickly gained traction partly because she comes from the influential Ntutu political family in Narok.

Residents who supported the late MP say rallying behind his widow would symbolise unity at a time when the constituency is still mourning.

Other aspirants quietly testing the waters

Beyond the widow, several local politicians are believed to be quietly positioning themselves for the contest.

Former parliamentary aspirants, businessmen and youth leaders have reportedly begun consultations with elders and political parties.

In Narok’s trading centres--from Kilgoris to the rural villages of Emurua Dikirr--the by-election has already become a dominant topic of conversation.

A constituency that rarely has calm politics

Created in 2013, Emurua Dikirr Constituency quickly developed a reputation for competitive politics.

Ng’eno himself was known for his fiery speeches in Parliament and his blunt criticism of political rivals.

Two more by-elections announced

In the same notice, the electoral commission also declared by-elections in two county assembly wards:

  • Porro Ward in Samburu County
  • Endo Ward in Elgeyo-Marakwet County

Both seats became vacant earlier this year after the deaths of their respective Members of County Assembly.
