Diani traders have a reason to celebrate with the opening of a new Sh200 million modern market in Mvindeni, Msambweni Constituency.

The development aims to offer a safer and more structured environment for local vendors, who previously operated along the hazardous Mombasa-Lunga Lunga highway.

The newly inaugurated Diani Modern Market is set to accommodate over 4,000 traders, complete with essential amenities such as ablution facilities, market stalls, and a dedicated breastfeeding room.

Women traders expressed gratitude saying most public places do not consider breast feeding women forcing them to breast feed in the open or leave their babies at home.

"The breastfeeding centre allows us to nurse our babies in privacy. We will be able to observe the six months exclusive breastfeeding rule very well. Also we have ablution areas. We can perform prayers timely," said Ms Mwanaharusi Mwaganda, a trader.

Another trader, Mr Hamisi Mwalau, said the market will offer a solution to farmers who were encountering post-harvest losses.

"We have a space where we are able to sell our produce. We now request the governor to complete the Shimba hill fruit processing plant," Mr Mwalau said.

Kwale County Governor Fatuma Achani highlighted the market’s role in fostering a supportive business environment.

“We are committed to facilitating every type of trader, including those with special needs like breastfeeding mothers, ensuring they have a dignified space to operate,” Governor Achani said.

She also stressed the importance of maintaining peace and security to attract further investment.

“Our county relies heavily on tourism and trade. To thrive, we must ensure our region is safe and welcoming," she said.

Msambweni MP Feisal Bader also underscored the importance of the market’s timing, noting the ongoing heavy traffic at the Likoni Ferry.

“The Dongo Kundu Bypass will significantly boost trade in the area. I urge President Ruto to expedite its completion to ease congestion and support local businesses,” Mr Bader said.

Raphael Muli, chairman of the Diani Market, expressed gratitude for the new facility.

“This market addresses long-standing issues faced by traders who previously had to sell along roadsides, often facing fines and safety risks,” Mr Muli noted.

Local trader Josephine Wahu welcomed the development, highlighting the challenges of operating in the open.

“Selling produce like tomatoes in exposed areas led to losses from sun damage and rain. This new market will help us protect our goods and increase profitability,” Ms Wahu said.

According to governor Achani, Kwale County plans to establish additional modern markets across the region to further support local production and job creation.
