Smallholder tea farmers in Kenya are set to benefit from a significant import of fertiliser, arriving in the country starting September 10, 2024, in preparation for the upcoming short rains.
The Kenya Tea Development Agency Management Services (KTDA MS) has imported 97,000 metric tonnes of fertiliser for the 2024/2025 season, marking an increase from the 88,000 metric tonnes procured in 2023.
This rise in fertiliser imports reflects both the expansion of smallholder tea farms and a growing demand for fertiliser orders placed through KTDA by individuals and organisations outside the agency's network.
The NPK 26:5:5 fertiliser, sourced directly from Russia, will be distributed to farmers via their respective tea factories after being bagged at the Port of Mombasa.
"The first shipment of approximately 47,400 tonnes will arrive at the Port of Mombasa on September 10, 2024, with the second shipment expected two weeks later," said Collins Bett, Managing Director of KTDA MS.
“We are confident that farmers will receive the fertiliser promptly, thanks to our efficient logistics plan and dedicated team.”
The final price of a 50kg bag of fertiliser will be influenced by factors such as the cost of natural gas, exchange rates, shipment costs, and insurance, as well as transportation to tea factories.
KTDA's bulk procurement through competitive international bidding allows more than 680,000 small-scale tea farmers to access high-quality fertiliser at competitive prices.
Additionally, KTDA's fertiliser credit scheme enables farmers to pay for the fertiliser in instalments, easing the financial burden while ensuring timely application during the short rains crucial for maintaining high-quality green leaf production, vital to Kenya’s premium tea industry.
This import of fertiliser continues KTDA’s commitment to supporting smallholder tea farmers and improving their productivity.
