The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) has called for the immediate release of activist Maverick Aoko, who has been absent from her online platforms for five(5) days.

While addressing the search efforts for detained activist Boniface Mwangi at Kamukunji Police Station, LSK President Faith Odhiambo urged Kenyans to use the society's hotline to share any information regarding Aoko's whereabouts.

"We have been informed that she is missing, and we appeal for any information. Our hotline remains open—please reach out to LSK. Every life matters," Ms Odhiambo stated.

She further demanded the immediate release of Aoko, emphasizing the importance of a nation free from fear and intimidation.

Odhiambo also encouraged Kenyans to unite in upholding the rule of law, ensuring that every individual can fully exercise their rights.

"People may express views that may be uncomfortable, but there are legal avenues to address that. Let’s handle disagreements within the framework of the law," she added.

Efforts to contact Aoko offline have so far been unsuccessful.

This situation has led many Kenyans to suspect that Aoko is the latest in a series of abductions targeting outspoken activists and social media commentators.

The hashtag "Where is Aoko?" has gained traction on X (formerly Twitter), with numerous users voicing their concerns and demanding answers.

Ms Odhiambo emphasized the need to adhere to legal protocols.

On August 19, 2024, Aoko was formally charged in court. The charges included publishing false information under Section 23 of the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act No. 5 of 2018, cyber harassment under Section 27, and fraudulent use of electronic data under Section 38 of the same act.

Many Kenyans have responded on social media, some expressing hope for her safe return.

"Maverick Aoko is missing, and this is serious. Let’s pray that she is okay. We are living in a country where the regime is heartless," said Cornelis Ronoh.

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino also commented, stating, "Aoko has been missing for days, and her whereabouts are unknown. I’ve reached out to her family members and close friends."

As her supporters await news of her whereabouts, Aoko's case highlights wider concerns about freedom of expression, the rule of law, and security in Kenya.
