As the traditional initiation ceremonies approach, the County Government of Uasin Gishu has undertaken significant steps to address the safety of boys set to undergo circumcision.

This initiative comes against the backdrop of tragic incidents in the past, where lives were lost during the rites, ostensibly due to adverse practices.

County Executive in charge of Health Services Abraham Serem who presided over training of individuals who carry out the procedure on boys reiterated the importance of ensuring the safety and well-being of the children involved.

During the training at Eldoret City which attracted circumcision experts and practitioners drawn from all the six sub-counties in the county, Dr Serem highlighted that incidents of torture during the secluded rituals have been leading to cause of fatalities.

"As circumcisers, you are the mentors of the children you handle. Please ensure that all the children who undergo the procedure come out safely, as our primary mandate is to save lives," said Dr Serem.

He stressed the need for circumcisers to foster and instill positive values within the seclusion settings, by calling for the development of a structured curriculum to guide these traditional practices to ensure they are safe and respectful of the children's rights and well-being.

According to Dr Serem, service providers should sensitise the public on the importance of enrolling in Social Health Authority (SHA) where they will greatly benefit from the government medical services.

County Chief Officer for Clinical Services Joyce Sang on her part called on the circumcisers to enhance prevention and control measures and adherence to emergency referral systems.

Dr Sang also encouraged providers to actively engage community members in sensitisation programmes to raise awareness of safe practices as well as underscore the importance of prioritising health during initiation ceremonies.

Last week, Uasin Gishu County Governor Jonathan Bii reiterated his administration's commitment to enhancing safety measures during the initiation season.

According to Governor Bii, his administration is dedicated to protect children's rights and ensuring that cultural practices evolve to safeguard lives.

Also present during the forum was Principal Programmes Officer Johanes Mosbei.
