Nandi Senator Samson Cherarkei and Embakasi East Babu Owino have called for swift action following a reported incident of police brutality against youths in Nandi Hills Town.
A CCTV video shows the incident occurred on the night of 10th January.
The youths, many of whom were playing pool at a local hall, were allegedly physically assaulted, intimidated, and threatened by officers from Nandi Hills Police Station.
According to the leaders, the young men’s only “offence” was playing a game, which is not prohibited by law.
The assault reportedly involved beatings, threats, and use of force that violated their basic rights under the Constitution.
Senator Cherarkei called on the Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja, to interdict and suspend the officers responsible to allow independent investigations.
He also demanded that county security officials who failed to prevent the violence face administrative action, and urged the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to launch an immediate probe with a view to prosecution.
“These rogue officers have violated Article 244 of the Constitution, which requires the police to respect human rights and maintain professionalism. We must stop this impunity,” said Senator Cherarkei.
MP Babu Owino described the incident as deeply disturbing, highlighting the social impact on the youth.
“Our young people were simply playing pool. Yet they were beaten and harassed. We demand the immediate arrest of the officers involved, and they must be charged with assault. Young Kenyans deserve safety, dignity, and opportunity,” he said.
Both leaders stressed that police cannot act as judge, jury, and prosecutor.
They said the presumption of innocence must be upheld and that law enforcement must not punish citizens for harmless leisure activities.
Senator Cherarkei confirmed he had engaged the Senate Committee on National Security to investigate the incident urgently, while maintaining contact with the victims to ensure justice is served.
Both leaders warned that unless action is taken, such rogue behaviour could recur, undermining public trust in the police.
The youth in Nandi Hills are reported to have suffered physical injuries and trauma, with local sources calling for psychosocial support alongside accountability.
