The Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja, has ordered immediate administrative action against six senior officers captured on CCTV beating residents in Nandi Hills.

That night at the pool bar in Nandi Hills, police officers were captured on CCTV forcibly removing and assaulting residents, including women and men present at the venue.

The footage shows officers beating and pushing patrons, creating panic and fear among those present.

Several victims were injured in the scuffle, and the incident sparked outrage locally and online, as the actions were widely regarded as an abuse of authority and a breach of public trust.

The footage, which emerged earlier this month, sparked public outrage and political commentary.

Nandi Senator Samson Cherarkei condemned the incident, calling for swift accountability, while Embakasi East MP Babu Owino described the conduct as “disturbing” and urged police leadership to act decisively.

Following an exhaustive investigation by the Internal Affairs Unit (IAU), the IG accepted the recommendations and directed action against the following officers:

  • Tinderet Sub-County Police Commander (OCPD)
  • Officers Commanding Stations (OCS) for Songoh and Nandi Hills
  • Officers in charge of RDU, GSU and ASTU units at Songoh Camp

The NPS emphasized that local commanders are responsible for all conduct within their jurisdictions, noting that there would be no tolerance for misconduct.

“Every officer bears a solemn duty as a custodian of public safety, security, and property,” the NPS statement said and was signed by Police Spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga.

“This obligation must be discharged with professionalism and responsibility at all times.”

The NPS expressed regret over the incident and extended its sympathies to the victims.

The statement added that NPS will continue dealing strongly against illegal acts in accordance with the law.
