Harambee Starlets finish second as Australia wins FIFA Series in Nairobi

President William Ruto led the chorus with a message posted on his X handle, congratulating the Harambee Starlets for finishing runners-up at the FIFA Series Women’s Tournament on April 15. His words carried the weight of a country that had watched its team rise to the occasion.

He praised their discipline, resilience, and growing strength, noting that they had carried the nation’s hopes with pride while showcasing their talent on the global stage.Ruto urged them to build on the lessons learned and the experience gained, expressing confidence that even greater heights awaited.

“Hongera, Starlets!” he concluded, a simple, but powerful salute that echoed across the football community.On his part, Football Kenya Federation president Hussein Mohamed extended congratulations to Australia for winning the inaugural FIFA Series Women hosted in Kenya.

He commended the Starlets for their spirited performance throughout the tournament, acknowledging the role of India and Malawi in making the four-nation event a success.He also turned attention to the global body, thanking FIFA for entrusting Kenya with hosting duties.

The experience, he said, would leave a lasting mark on the country’s football landscape. And to the fans, he offered gratitude for their unwavering support, noting how their presence created an electric atmosphere that elevated the tournament into an unforgettable spectacle.

Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya highlighted Kenya’s success beyond the pitch. He pointed to the nation’s excellence and efficiency in hosting the 2026 FIFA Series, as well as the extraordinary sporting spirit displayed by its fans.

On the field, the story unfolded with intensity and purpose. Australia emerged champions after beating Kenya 2-0 in the final on April 15 at Nyayo National Stadium, Nairobi.

The Matildas had earlier thrashed Malawi 5-0 in the semi-final on April 11, while Kenya secured their place in the final with a 2-0 victory over India.

In the third-place play-off, India edged Malawi 3-2 in a tightly contested match.

In the end, it was more than results. It was a tournament of moments, of growth, belief, and a glimpse into the future of Kenyan women’s football.
