Both Kabras Sugar and KCB remain unbeaten after nine wins each, with Saturday's Ruaraka fixture set to decide early momentum in the race for the 2026 Kenya Cup crown.
Defending champions Kabras Sugar will put their remarkable unbeaten streak on the line when they travel to Nairobi to face former champions KCB in a top-of-the-table Kenya Cup clash this Saturday.
The highly anticipated encounter at the KCB Sports Club, Ruaraka, pits the league leaders Kabras against a resurgent KCB side, with both teams unbeaten this season in the 12-team men’s topflight competition.
Both have won their first nine games this season in the one-way league in which top-two qualify automatically for the semi-finals and teams ranked third to sixth face off in playoffs to enter semi-finals.
Whoever finishes the league on top in the regular season also gets the ticket to host the final.
Based in Kakamega County, sugarmillers Kabras have dominated the domestic scene in recent years and arrive in Nairobi riding a staggering run of 50 consecutive victories dating back to the 2023-2024 season.
The sugarmillers are also chasing a fifth straight Kenya Cup title, a feat that would further cement their status as the dominant force in Kenyan rugby.
But standing in their way is a determined KCB side eager to reclaim the crown they last lifted in 2021. The bankers have shown strong form this season and boosted their title credentials last weekend with a statement victory over Menengai Oilers.
KCB forward Richel Wangila believes Saturday’s contest will be a defining moment in the race for top honours.
“It’s a massive Kenya Cup fixture for both sides,” said Wangila.
“KCB will want to impose physicality and tempo, while Kabras Sugar RFC will be keen to protect that 50-game unbeaten run and control territory.”
For Wangila, who recently joined the bankers from Quins, the move to the Ruaraka-based club has been seamless.
“The environment is pleasant and professional. There’s strong cohesion within the squad and a culture that emphasizes accountability and high standards,” he said.
“Off the pitch, the support system has made the transition smooth, allowing me to settle quickly and focus on performance.”
While Kabras have established themselves as the benchmark in Kenyan rugby, their camp expects a fierce challenge from the hosts.
Kabras coach Edwin Achayo acknowledged he has been concentrating largely on development rugby this season but believes the outcome could hinge on forward dominance.
“I haven't really followed much of senior rugby this season so I am not best placed to give an opinion on this. My focus has been on age-grade rugby,” said Achayo.
“If I were to roll the dice on this, I would say this would be a battle of the forwards. Whoever has the best platform from the forwards will take the day. The set pieces will be a key area of focus for both teams as usual.”
Indeed, analysts expect the contest to be decided largely in the trenches. Set-piece efficiency, breakdown dominance and success at the gain line are likely to prove decisive between two evenly matched sides.
Weather conditions could also play a significant role. With wet conditions expected, discipline, tactical kicking and clinical execution will be crucial for both teams as they look to manage territory and capitalise on scoring opportunities.
With Kabras seeking to extend their historic unbeaten run and KCB eager to assert themselves as genuine title contenders, Saturday’s encounter promises to be a classic battle between two of Kenyan rugby’s heavyweights.
Kick-off is expected to draw significant attention from fans and could offer a clear indication of which side holds the early advantage in the race for the 2026 Kenya Cup crown.
