Kenya unveil largely unchanged squads for HSBC SVNS 2 opener in Nairobi

With only one debutant in Shujaa and two new additions for the Lionesses, Kenya aim to capitalise on familiar conditions in the Nairobi leg.

Hosts Kenya have unveiled largely unchanged squads as they prepare for the explosive opening round of the HSBC SVNS 2 scheduled for February 14-15 at Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi.

The men’s team, Shujaa, has largely retained the core that has served them in recent outings, with only one new face making the cut. David Nyangige of Impala RFC earns a call-up after impressive domestic performances, providing added depth to the squad. Leadership continuity has also been maintained, with experienced KCB duo George Ooro and Samuel Asati retaining their roles as co-captains as Kenya seeks stability and consistency in the highly competitive series.

Among the key players expected to carry the hosts’ ambitions are electric winger Patrick Odongo of Daystar Falcons and Kabras Sugar’s Kevin Wekesa. Wekesa recently received international recognition from the International Olympic Committee for his contribution to climate change awareness, adding another layer of inspiration to his on-field exploits. With home advantage and familiar conditions, Shujaa will be keen to make a strong statement in the first leg of the three-tournament league, which will later move to Montevideo, Uruguay, and Sao Paulo, Brazil.

The men’s competition features six teams: Kenya, Germany, Canada, Belgium, the United States and Uruguay, promising a demanding test from the outset as Kenya targets a solid start to build momentum for the remaining legs.

On the women’s side, the Kenya Lionesses have introduced two new players into their final squad. Charity Nilah and Marvel Oswago earn their places as coach Simon Odongo balances fresh talent with proven experience. Speedsters Janet Okello and Freshia Oduor are once again expected to provide cutting edge, while France-based Grace Okulu brings valuable international exposure and leadership to the squad.

Despite the optimism, the Lionesses will miss the experience of Judith Okumu and Faith Livoi, who were left out of the final 12. Their absence places added responsibility on the remaining players as Kenya prepares for a challenging tournament featuring China, Spain, South Africa, Brazil and Argentina.

Both Shujaa and the Lionesses had one-week high performance camps in South Africa and Spain last month, respectively.

With the Nairobi leg already sold out, anticipation is high for a vibrant rugby sevens spectacle as Kenya looks to capitalize on home support and make a strong impression on the global stage.
