Kenyan sides Pipeline, KCB and DCI on fire at Africa Clubs volleyball
Kenya Pipeline and KCB had a good day in office at the 2026 African Club Women Volleyball Championship in Cairo, Egypt on Wednesday, April 15.
Five-time former African champions Kenya Pipeline underlined their title ambitions with a commanding 3-0 (25-12, 25-12, 25-17) victory over VC La Loi of the Democratic Republic of Congo in a Pool B clash. The Oilers, who last lifted the continental crown in 2005, have now won three consecutive matches without dropping a single set.
Coached by national women's team head coach Geoffrey Omondi, Pipeline began their campaign with wins over Kalibi Sports of Ghana on April 13 and Gender Light of Burundi on April 14, extending a flawless run that signals a strong push for the title. The team has shown steady progress in recent years, finishing second in 2024 and third in 2025 and have set the target of ending the 20-year title drought.
Two-time African champions KCB got off to a flying start in Group D with a straight-sets win over Nigeria’s Vipers and Partners on April 15. The bankers, who previously lifted the title in 2006 and 2022, but finished fifth last year, secured a 3-0 victory (25-19, 25-19, 25-19) at the Al Ahly Sports Club Complex in Gezira.
In a post-match interview, KCB player Deborah Jesang, appearing in her third club championship, acknowledged there was still room for improvement despite the convincing result.
“We made some mistakes in this game, but we rectified them. The coach invested in our young players who started today’s match, and we look forward to an even better performance in the next one,” she said.
Head coach Japheth Munala explained his decision to field less experienced players in the opening fixture, emphasizing long-term squad development.
“We started the game with inexperienced players to help them acclimatize to the tournament. We are not taking any team or any game for granted. I have told the girls that if they get an opportunity to finish the game, they should do so,” he said.
KCB will look to build on their strong start when they face ARSU Ladies in their next Group D match scheduled for Thursday afternoon.
In a pivotal Pool C encounter, Kenya's Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) shot down Uganda's Kampala Capital City (KCC) 3-0 on Wednesday.
