Volleyball: KCB unveil strong squad for CAVB Women's African Volleyball Club Championship
With ambition high and history on their side, KCB Women’s Volleyball Club on Friday, April 10, 2026, unveiled a formidable squad set to storm Cairo for the 2026 Africa Women’s Club Championship from April 11-24.
The bankers will send a 14-player delegation, blending experience and emerging talent as they seek to reclaim continental glory. The squad features seasoned names such as Mercy Moim, who is the former national women team captain, Juliana Namutira, Sharleen Maywa, and Deborah Jesang, alongside key contributors Belinda Barasa, Mildred Cherop, Pauline Chemtai, Sharon Serem, Lincy Jeruto, Josephine Kataa, Josephine Wafula, Malyne Terry, Esther Mutinda, and Fridah Boke.
Guiding the team is a well-rounded technical bench led by Head Coach Japheth Munala, who is the former national women team head coach, assisted by David Kinga, with Technical Director Paul Bitok providing strategic oversight. The backroom staff also includes Team Manager Marvin Tuikong, Team Doctor Simon Kibe, Strength and Conditioning Coach Esau Otieno, and trainer Eunice Mayo.
Speaking during the flag-off in Nairobi on Friday, KCB Group Director of Marketing and Communication Rosalind Gichuru emphasized the importance of the championship as a platform for both the players and the country. She noted that the tournament offers an opportunity for athletes to showcase their talent at the highest level while reinforcing Kenya’s growing reputation as a force in African volleyball.
Former Africa champions KCB head into the competition eager to bounce back after a fifth-place finish last year. Having lifted the continental title in 2006 and again in 2022, the team is determined to reclaim its position among Africa’s elite clubs.
This year’s tournament will feature 24 teams from 14 countries, including Egyptian powerhouses Zamalek SC, Al Ahly SC, and Alexandria SC. Kenya will field KCB, Kenya Pipeline, and DCI. Pipeline are former champions. The oil purveyors won their fifth and last title in 2005.
KCB will be boosted by the return of Kenyan international Esther Mutinda, whose experience adds strength to the squad. The inclusion of libero Josephine Kataa is expected to solidify the team’s defence, while middle blocker Mildred Cherop returns after a stint in the United Arab Emirates, bringing valuable international exposure.
However, the team will miss experienced captain Edith Wisa, who is unavailable due to personal reasons, a notable absence in their leadership ranks.
Assistant Coach David Kinga expressed confidence in the team’s preparations, stating that the players are motivated and ready to compete despite the expected stiff competition.
Domestically, KCB has shown solid form and currently sits fourth in the national league standings with 10 points, behind DCI, Post Bank, and Kenya Prisons. After their continental campaign, the bankers will shift focus to the Kenya Cup quarterfinal clash against Kenya Defence Forces, as they continue their pursuit of both local and international success.
