Team Kenya shines in athletics at EAC Inter‑Parliamentary Games

Kenyan lawmakers clinched gold in the 4×400m relay.

Team Kenya powered to a strong showing in athletics at the ongoing East African Community Inter‑Parliamentary Games (EAC‑IPG) in Kampala, Uganda.

Kenyan lawmakers clinched gold in the 4×400m relay, with the team captained by Vincent Musyoka (Mwala Constituency) crossing the finish line in 50.8 seconds alongside David Ochieng (Ugenya), Dan Wanyama (Webuye West) and Bernard Kitur (Nandi Hills).

Musyoka further secured silver in the 100m race with a time of 12.6 seconds, finishing behind Kitur, who bagged gold in 11.8 seconds.

In the women’s category, Catherine Omanyo (Busia County Woman Representative) won gold in the 100m after clocking 16.7 seconds, while Esther Okenyuri (Nominated Senator) finished fourth in 20.1 seconds.

Team Kenya also placed second in the women’s 4×100m relay with a time of 1:26.0.

In middle-distance races, Phylis Bartoo (Moiben) clocked 8:37.8 to take silver in the women’s 1500m. She also placed fourth in the 400m with a time of 1:55.1.

Meanwhile Nominated Senator Beth Syengo finished with 2:20.3 in a race won by Rwanda’s Mukabilisa Germaine.

In the men’s 400m, Mukunji Gitonga (Manyatta) clinched bronze with a time of 1:03.9, followed by Joshua Kandie (Baringo Central), who placed fourth in 1:06.05.

In the men’s 1500m race, Titus Lotee, Joshua Kimilu and Kipruto Chemitei competed alongside John Kagucha (Mukurwe‑ini) and John Paul Mwirigi (Igembe South).

Lotee took silver after clocking 5:24.0, narrowly behind Acan Julius who claimed gold in 5:23.5. Kagucha secured bronze in 5:54.1, while Kimilu (6:22.7), Mwirigi (7:35.0) and Chemitei (7:49.7) completed the field.

The women’s 4×100m relay team comprised Irene Kasalu, Betty Maina, Esther Okenyuri and Florence Jematiah.

Kenya’s performance in athletics has demonstrated depth across sprints, middle-distance races and relays — raising hopes for more medals as the Games continue.
