Ababu Namwamba lands role as Kenya's High Commissioner to Uganda, his birthplace

Ababu Namwamba is expected to enjoy his tenure in Uganda, where he was born while his parents worked there.

President William Ruto on Wednesday made key diplomatic reshuffles, changes that saw Kenya's High Commissioner to Uganda Joash Maangi moved to the role of Kenya’s representative to the European Union in Brussels, Belgium.

Former Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba is now set to become Kenya's High Commissioner to Uganda, a role he will most obviously enjoy, having been born there.

The changes were officially confirmed by Head of Public Service Felix Koskei and are viewed as reflecting both routine administrative needs and deliberate political manoeuvring in the lead-up to the 2027 General Election.

“His excellency the President has this afternoon sanctioned changes within the nation's Foreign Service. The changes are necessitated by vacancies arising from the completion of the terms of service of serving Ambassadors,” read part of the press release.

The two, Amb Maangi and Amb Namwamba take the new roles effectively.

“These assignments go beyond mere diplomatic representation; they involve positioning reliable individuals in key posts that serve the country’s interests and support the government’s broader political objectives,” Koskei remarked.

Amb Maangi, who had been based in Kampala, now takes charge of Kenya’s relationship with the European Union—an essential partner in trade and economic matters.

Amb Namwamba will be happy to work in Kampala, Uganda.

Uganda is a neighbouring country vital for commerce, security, and East African collaboration.

During the December 2025 and New Year festivities, Amb Namwamba made a trip to Uganda, together with his family, where he said he enjoyed his stay there.

“Uganda, the Pearl of Africa, is home to me in every sense. This festive season I packed my clan with a couple of the children’s buddiez in the family ride, and zoomed off on a truly refreshing road trip from Port Victoria on the shores of Lake Victoria in Kenya all the way to Entebbe on the Ugandan side of Africa’s biggest and the world’s second largest fresh water lake,” Amb Namwamba posted on January 8, 2026, on his page on social media platform X.

He added that the road took them through Busia, to Tororo, Jinja--his birthplace and the source of the great River Nile--and Kampala City.

He referred to those Ugandan towns as “the stomping grounds of my beloved late parents Peter and Agatha”.

“We spent a day and a night in each of these beautiful towns, with three nights in Entebbe being the highlight of the excursion.”

He added that it was a delight for each one of the nine of them.

“We love UGANDA🇺🇬 in similar manner as we love KENYA🇰🇪 and deeply cherish AFRICA,” he said.

These ambassadorial changes occur against the backdrop of Kenya’s gradual approach to the 2027 elections.

Analysts interpret the moves as serving dual purposes: administrative streamlining and efforts to solidify support within the Kenya Kwanza coalition, while projecting capability and authority in significant international arenas.

Koskei highlighted the combined aims of such decisions, stating: “Thoughtful deployments enhance both functional performance and political unity. During phases of transition, when discussions about succession are under way, every such placement attracts scrutiny from those inside and outside government.”

The reassignments underscore how senior diplomatic postings function as instruments for both effective administration and political leverage.

By stationing capable figures in Brussels and Kampala, the government fortifies Kenya’s global outreach and keeps vital domestic alliances firmly in line with the ruling coalition.
