At least nine people, including two children, have been confirmed dead following a fatal road accident on the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway at Karai, near Naivasha, police said.
The accident occurred on Sunday night at about 11:20pm near Eagle Petrol Station, involving a Greenline bus (KCJ 132U) and a Nanyuki Express Cabs shuttle (KDA 519D).
Several other passengers were injured and are receiving treatment at Naivasha District Hospital.
Emergency response teams and officers from Naivasha Police Station responded to the scene and carried out rescue and recovery operations.
Investigations into the cause of the crash are ongoing.
In a separate incident also reported on Sunday night, a Bahrain bus traveling from Nairobi to Mandera was involved in a fatal accident between Hasabeyn and Dujis in Mandera County.
In the incident, the bus hit a stationary lorry between Garissa and Modogashe, near Baraki area at around 9pm, causing panic and grief among commuters using the busy long-distance corridor linking Northern Kenya to the capital.
The route is commonly used by travelers heading to Wajir and Mandera counties.
According to reports on the ground the lorry was not clearly visible to the bus driver, leading to a fatal head-on collision.
The lorry driver, who has been identified, and one of his conductors who was inside the vehicle during the collision, lost their lives on the scene.
Emergency responders and security personnel rushed to the scene, where bodies of the deceased were taken to the mortuary, with the injured passengers evacuated to nearby health facilities in Modogashe and Garisa Town for urgent medical treatment.
The two incidents add to growing concern over road safety on major highways, with police urging motorists to exercise caution and strictly observe traffic regulations.
