Five killed, one seriously injured in gruesome Kirinyaga accident

The lorry carrying bags of maize towards Sagana lost control and hit two(2) private vehicles travelling towards Karatina.

At least five(5) people died on the spot and one(1) was seriously injured in an accident involving a lorry and two(2) vehicles at Kibirigwi area along Sagana-Karatina Road in Ndia, Kirinyaga County.

According to a police report, a lorry that was heading towards Sagana direction ferrying bags of maize lost control and hit two(2) private vehicles that were heading towards Karatina direction.

"Five(5) people have died on the spot while one(1) was rushed to hospital by police officers," it read in part.

The report further added that police were investigating the incident to establish the cause of the accident, noting that the driver of the lorry also sustained injuries.

The lorry was carrying bags of maize towards Sagana, lost control and hit two(2) private vehicles travelling towards Karatina.

The truck overturned as it was going too fast, spilling several bags of maize on the road. 

Some locals scrambled for the food.

The five(5) bodies were taken to the local mortuary.

Fatal accidents have been on the rise in recent days amid calls for caution to curb the trend.

More than 4,000 people are killed in separate accidents each year.

Hundreds of others are left with serious injuries, affecting their families.
