Domestic flight veers off Taxiway at JKIA, all 50 passengers safe

All 50 passengers and crew safe after domestic flight veers off taxiway at JKIA with operations continuing normally.

All the 50 passengers and crew members are safe after a domestic flight from Elwak airstrip in Mandera County to Nairobi, carrying 50 passengers on board, veered off Taxiway Echo shortly after landing.

The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) confirmed the aircraft incident occurred at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) on Monday afternoon.

Fortunately, KAA said every passenger and crew member was promptly confirmed safe and unharmed.

Emergency response units at the airport were immediately mobilised, following standard safety protocols.

The Authority emphasised that flight schedules and overall airport activities have not been affected and continue as usual.

KAA said it is collaborating with appropriate aviation bodies to arrange the secure recovery and repositioning of the aircraft.

"The Authority is working closely with the relevant aviation agencies to ensure the safe removal of the aircraft," KAA said in a statement that was issued under the signature of Dr Mohamud Gedi, who serves as Acting Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer.

It further reassured the public of its continued commitment to the safety, security, and efficiency of airport operations.

This event marks another incident at JKIA in recent times. On 14 June 2024, a separate aircraft occurrence led to temporary closure of the main runway, though no injuries were sustained in that case either.

Such occurrences, while concerning, are usually managed through rigorous procedures designed to protect lives and minimise disruption.

Further details regarding the cause of Monday’s deviation are expected once investigations by relevant agencies conclude.

The Kenya Airports Authority continues to monitor the situation closely while upholding its commitment to transparent communication with stakeholders and the general public
