Four dead after sewer line collapses in Shauri Moyo

• A torrent of soil covered the labourers.

Four(4) workers on Friday died after a sewer that was under construction collapsed in Shauri Moyo Estate, Nairobi.

Three(3) other workers survived the incident after an alarm was raised stating that seven(7) people had been stuck in the rubble.

National Police Service spokesperson Resila Onyango stated that only the three(3) had been left alive.

She at the same time indicated that rescue teams rescued three(3) people.

“They were excavating a sewerage line when it collapsed. We lost four(4) people, and three were rescued,” she said.

Rescuers from the county government and the Kenya Red Cross responded quickly to the site and rescued the three individuals.

“Rescuers have saved three(3) individuals and transported them to Mama Lucy Hospital, thanks to a joint effort by the Nairobi City County Fire Brigade, NMS Ambulance, Kenya Red Cross, and Kenya Police,” Kenya Red Cross said in a statement.

Mr James Musyoki, a survivor of the devastating sewer line collapse, recalled the horrifying moment when the ground suddenly gave way.

Describing the incident, he remembers being engulfed by a torrent of soil, which buried him up to his neck.

“When I was finally pulled out from the debris, I saw two other individuals who had tragically lost their lives. I was somewhat disoriented and unconscious, so the entire tragedy unfolded very rapidly around me,” Mr Musyoki said.

This catastrophic event, which occurred around 1am at the construction site in Shauri Moyo, tragically claimed the lives of four(4) workers and left several others injured.

Musyoki, who said he was being treated at Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital, blamed the contractor for failing to provide the necessary work equipment.

“We were using our torches when suddenly the unthinkable happened,” he recalled.

The incident only came to light at dawn, an eyewitness said.

In the early hours of the morning, curious onlookers flocked to the scene.

As time went by, the youths became angry and blocked the road in the Majengo area.
