Iran embassy blames organised groups for deadly unrest

The Iranian Embassy in Kenya said demonstrations that began on December 28, 2025, were initially driven by legitimate economic concerns.

The Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Nairobi on Friday blamed organised terrorist and separatist groups for the recent deadly unrest in Iran.

It said  peaceful economic protests were hijacked and turned violent.

In a press release, the Embassy said demonstrations that began on December 28, 2025, were initially driven by legitimate economic concerns raised by bazaar merchants and trade guilds following foreign exchange fluctuations.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran recognises the right to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression as guaranteed under the Constitution and international legal frameworks,” the Embassy said, adding that authorities exercised restraint during the early stages of the protests.

However, the Embassy said the situation later changed after what it described as pre-planned and externally backed groups infiltrated the demonstrations.

“Evidence gathered by security agencies, including intercepted communications and seized weaponry, confirms that the protests were transformed into coordinated violent attacks against civilians, protesters and security forces,” the statement said.

The Embassy said Iranian security agencies acted to restore order, arguing that the protection of lives and property remains the primary responsibility of any sovereign state.

On temporary internet restrictions imposed during the unrest, the Embassy said the measures were security-related and intended to disrupt coordination of violent acts and protect national infrastructure.

“These measures are temporary and are being eased as security is restored,” the statement said.

The Embassy said millions of Iranians had since rallied in support of national sovereignty while distinguishing between legitimate economic grievances and violence.
