Why Netanyahu is trending as the US-Israel war on Iran enters a dangerous new phase

Netanyahu remains the central figure in Israel’s strategy.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is at the centre of global attention as tensions with Iran escalate.

Amid circulating rumours about his status, Netanyahu posted a video from a café near Jerusalem on March 15, 2026.

In the clip--shared on his official social accounts--he is seen sitting with a cup of coffee, speaking with an aide, and using humour to respond to speculation online.

Netanyahu joked lightly about the claims, reassuring viewers that he is alive and continuing to lead Israel.

The video was released amid Iranian media claims that the Israeli PM was killed during a missile attack.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps vowed to “hunt down” and “kill” him if indeed he was still alive as the conflict between the US and Israel on one side and Iran on the other enters its third week.

Israel says its recent missile and drone strikes are aimed at neutralising Iranian missile capabilities and protecting its territory.

Iran, on the other hand, calls the attacks aggression and a violation of its sovereignty, insisting that its own missile and drone launches are retaliatory measures.

The conflict is entering a dangerous new phase:

Escalating military exchanges: Strikes are reaching deeper into each other’s territory, raising the risk of civilian casualties.

Regional actors on high alert: Groups such as Hezbollah could intervene, potentially widening the war.

Global economic stakes: The Strait of Hormuz, a key oil shipping route, is on alert. Any disruption could push fuel prices higher, affecting African economies and trade.

Information battles: Social media is flooded with manipulated content and unverified claims, creating confusion and public anxiety.

World leaders, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, have urged restraint, warning that miscalculations could destabilise the region.

Netanyahu remains the central figure in Israel’s strategy. His decisions in this period will shape Israel’s military operations and influence the broader trajectory of the conflict.

For African readers, the stakes are immediate:

  • rising fuel costs,
  • disrupted trade routes, and
  • the potential for regional instability.

These make it clear that what happens in the Middle East does not stay there.
