DAP Kenya has unveiled Kenya National Union of Nurses (KNUN) Secretary-General Seth Panyako as its flag bearer for the Malava parliamentary by-election slated for November 27.

Party leader Eugene Wamalwa said Mr Panyako emerged the strongest after a scientific poll commissioned by the United Opposition Coalition, which ranked him ahead of more than 15 aspirants.

“The report clearly shows that out of about 15 aspirants for the Malava parliamentary seat, there is one candidate who stands head and shoulders above all, and his name is Seth Ambosini Sindani Panyako,” Mr Wamalwa told reporters after a National Management Committee meeting at Chui House.

He added that the coalition used the same polling method earlier applied in Mbeere, where they settled on a joint candidate.

“We want to urge those in our party who are probably opposed to Mr Panyako to unite and support this candidate because he is a sure bet. He is the one who is going to deliver this seat,” he said.

Mr Panyako, who received his nomination certificate from the party’s top officials, pledged to deliver the seat to DAP Kenya and the opposition coalition.

“I want to assure the party and the people of Malava that I am equal to the task. The people of Malava have decided to vote for DAP Kenya and vote for me as their next Member of Parliament,” he said.

The party also issued a certificate to youthful aspirant Mr Isaiah Ayaya for the Kisa East ward seat in Kakamega.

On questions about Mr Panyako’s eligibility, Mr Wamalwa dismissed concerns, insisting that the legal position had been cleared.

“Mr Panyako is immensely qualified to run for that election. Our legal teams have already responded to the misguided position that said Mr Panyako is a State officer,” he said.

Mr Wamalwa said the Malava contest would be a litmus test for the opposition ahead of the 2027 General Election.
