Parents in Kangundo Constituency have been advised to offer career guidance to their children so that they can undertake marketable courses that lead to gainful employment.

Area MP Fabian Kyule said that at this time and age, some parents are still pushing their children to pursue teaching courses at a time when “the country has a surplus of teachers and the government is unable to absorb all of them”.

Mr Kyule who spoke on Friday during the inspection exercise of ongoing renovation of six(6) classrooms at Lietune Primary School, said the medical field was still understaffed as compared to other fields and urged parents to consider guiding their children accordingly.

The lawmaker observed that students spent time pursuing courses such as political science, chemical engineering, actuarial science, among many other degree courses which were not very marketable in Kenya.

Mr Kyule said the politicians in Kenya are not necessarily those who studied political science and other politics related courses.

He also added that degree courses such as chemical engineering were mainly suitable for developed countries.

"It is not good for a parent to struggle to educate their children only for the children to remain jobless because of poor career choices," said Mr Kyule, who is also the party leader of GDDP party.

He said while the Ministry of Education was offering all courses, it was upon the parents to advise their children to choose appropriate courses.

He disclosed that there were many more unemployed teachers in Kenya currently and others were still pursuing the course in colleges and universities.

"At the moment there are so many unemployed teachers, yet we are still advising our children to choose teaching because that is the job we know to be readily available," the lawmaker said.

The MP said each individual must take personal responsibility to prosper economically in order to develop the economy of the entire nation.
