The Ministry of Education has announced that schools will reopen as scheduled for the third term on Monday, moments after the Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) called off planned strike earlier Sunday.

"Parents and guardians are advised to ensure that their children report to their respective school for third term in accordance with the school calendar. As earlier notified, the Ministry has already disbursed capitation amount to all basic education institution to facilitate a seamless resumption of school operations," said the Cabinet Secretary (CS) for Education Julius Ogamba.

The strike, which was set to begin on Monday, was averted following successful negotiations between the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) and the teachers' unions.

The teachers had threatened to go on strike over delayed implementation of the second phase of the 2021-2025 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) and issues related to the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

The Government has reassured teachers of its commitment to addressing their concerns, despite the financial constraints facing the country.

Resources have been provided to ensure the implementation of the CBA and to support the ongoing retooling of teachers for CBC.

In a press release, Mr Ogamba thanked the teachers for their patriotism and dedication to learners' interests.
