The Speaker of the National Assembly, Moses Wetang’ula, has formally declared the Ol Kalou parliamentary seat vacant, triggering the process that will lead to a by-election.

The declaration, contained in a Special Gazette Notice dated April 20, follows the death of Ol Kalou MP David Njuguna Kiaraho, who passed away on March 29.

Legal process now in motion

In the notice, the Speaker stated that the vacancy arises under constitutional provisions governing the loss of a parliamentary seat.

The declaration has now been transmitted to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), which is responsible for organising a by-election.

Under Kenyan law, once notified, the IEBC is expected to set timelines for:

  • voter verification
  • candidate nominations
  • the by-election date

What this means for Ol Kalou voters

The move sets the stage for a competitive political contest in the Nyandarua-based constituency, as parties prepare to field candidates to fill the vacant seat.

Residents of Ol Kalou will return to the ballot to elect a new Member of Parliament, restoring representation in the National Assembly.

The issuance of writs by the Speaker is a mandatory constitutional step whenever a parliamentary seat falls vacant due to death, resignation, or disqualification.

It formally activates the electoral process and ensures continuity of representation in Parliament.
