Safaricom powers the 2026 WRC Safari Rally with Advanced Connectivity and IoT solutions

Safaricom will enhance safety operations during the rally through IoT-enabled telematic systems.

Safaricom will support the 2026 World Rally Championship (WRC) Safari Rally Kenya as the official technology and connectivity partner, delivering high-speed network services and advanced Internet of Things (IoT) solutions to help power one of the country’s most prominent global sporting events.

To ensure strong connectivity across the rally zones, the telecommunications company will deploy several Connectivity on Wheels (COWs).

These mobile network units will enhance coverage and increase internet capacity in areas expected to experience high traffic from spectators, teams, and media.

Safaricom will also optimize its 5G network in strategic locations to support high-speed data demands, including global livestreaming, digital content distribution, and real-time communication throughout the rally.

Recognizing the significant international attention the Safari Rally attracts, Safaricom will also establish fully equipped media centres designed to support local and international journalists covering the event. These centres will feature high-speed 5G Wi-Fi connectivity to facilitate fast file transfers, video uploads, and live reporting. In addition, selected media practitioners will receive bulk mobile data packages, enabling them to report seamlessly from rally stages and remote locations that may be outside designated media hubs.

According to Safaricom CEO Peter Ndegwa, the rally is expected to attract thousands of local and international spectators to Naivasha and surrounding counties, while millions more follow the competition through digital platforms worldwide. Ensuring reliable connectivity across the rally’s expansive and rugged terrain will therefore be critical for real-time broadcasting, co-ordination among organizers, and engagement with fans around the globe.

Beyond communications infrastructure, Safaricom will also enhance safety operations during the rally through IoT-enabled telematics systems. These solutions will be installed across the rally’s safety caravan fleet, including ambulances and rapid response vehicles. The connected systems will transmit real-time data to centralized command centres, allowing organizers to monitor vehicle movements, receive automated alerts, and respond quickly to incidents along the rally routes.

By turning emergency and rescue vehicles into connected smart assets, the technology will improve operational visibility, strengthen safety management, and reduce response times in the event of an accident or emergency across the vast rally stages.

To expand the rally experience beyond the physical event location, Safaricom will also introduce rally-themed mobile data bundles. These packages will allow fans across the country to follow the competition through livestreams, track rally progress, and access digital content on their mobile devices. After purchasing the rally bundle, subscribers will be able to access a dedicated link providing a comprehensive digital rally experience from anywhere in Kenya.

The Safari Rally remains one of Africa’s most iconic motorsport events and a highlight of the WRC calendar. Through enhanced connectivity, smart safety technologies, and digital media support, Safaricom aims to help deliver a secure, immersive, and globally accessible rally experience.

The 2026 WRC Safari Rally Kenya is scheduled to take place from March 12-15, 2026, in Naivasha, Nakuru County.
