St Peter’s Thunguma Comprehensive School in Nyeri Town Constituency has received a major boost with the renovation and equipping of its library, as well as the construction of a new ablution block.

The newly built ablution block was funded by the National Government Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF) under the leadership of Nyeri Town MP Maina Mathenge.

Meanwhile, the library renovation and stocking were made possible through the efforts of the Rotary Club of Nairobi, Thika Road, and officially handed over to the school on Saturday.

Speaking during the handover ceremony, Rotary Club of Nairobi Thika Road president Grace Gitonga, emphasized the importance of the project in improving literacy levels among students.

“We chose this school because it was in dire need of a library. Through collaboration with well-wishers, we have equipped it with books to enhance learners’ literacy levels,” said president Gitonga.

“Education and literacy are key focus areas for the Rotary Club, and we look forward to continuing our partnerships with schools across the country.”

According to Ms Gitonga, the library renovation cost approximately Sh630,000, while Sh162,000 was allocated for the purchase of books.

Additional book donations were received from the Kenya Literature Bureau, Kenya Library Services, and Moran Publishers, bringing the total project value to over Sh1 million.

“By improving literacy levels, we believe students will be able to compete on an equal footing with their peers from private institutions. This project will open their minds to various career opportunities and ultimately enhance their academic performance,” she added.

Thunguma Senior Headteacher Herman King’ori expressed gratitude for the initiative, noting its potential to uplift the academic standards of the school.

“We are grateful to the Rotary Club for this generous donation. Many of our students are slightly below average, but with these resources, we believe their performance will improve significantly,” said Mr King’ori.

Gender and Affirmative Action Principal Secretary (PS) Anne Wang’ombe, who was also present, underscored the importance of education in shaping a better future for learners.

“Education is a stepping stone to a better life, and we are delighted to be part of this transformative journey for St Peter’s Thunguma Comprehensive School,” Ms Wang’ombe told the media.

She further noted that the school community is eagerly anticipating a visit from the President to the Mt Kenya region, particularly to Nyeri, this week.

“We are expecting to welcome the President during his visit to the Mt Kenya region. We are eagerly waiting for his visit especially here in Nyeri,” the PS said.
